With the release of the newest MCU film, Avengers: Infinity War, this week’s pick for #SuperheroSaturdays is the INFINITY GAUNTLET story.
The Avengers: Infinity War film is about the story of the Infinity Gauntlet. Though it takes it’s liberties, the essence of the comic is very much alive in the movie. The Infinity Gauntlet is a six issue miniseries, published in 1991. It was written by Jim Starlin, penciled by George Pérez, and inked by Ron Lim.
The Infinity Gauntlet story is about Thanos’ love quest for the Mistress Death. In the comics, Thanos is infatuated with Death. He wants her as his lover. Death is upset that the balance of life and death is not in her favor. To impress her, Thanos takes on her mission to kill half the life in the universe. Though Thanos is an extremely powerful being, this mission is virtually impossible. Thus, he sets out to discover and possess all the Infinity Gems. Once Thanos took possession of each gem, he then places the gems on the Infinity Gauntlet — becoming the most powerful being in the universe. Interestingly, this did not get him his lady love.
The Battle for the Gauntlet
With the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos immediately completes his quest, and kills half of all life in the universe. When Silver Surfer tells the heroes on earth about the reason for the monumental genocide, all of Marvel’s mightiest heroes band together to defeat Thanos. Knowing the impossible odds, Adam Warlock and Silver Surfer hold a cosmic summit to enlist the help of great cosmic powers begins like Eternity, Kronos, Galactus, and the Living Tribunal. They were successful in obtaining the help, except for the Living Tribunal. The Living Tribunal felt Thanos was still keeping to natural selection. Still, no one was a match for the Mad Titan. He easily kills nearly all the heroes and cosmic forces, including Spider-man, Iron Man, the X-Men, Nova, Quasar, and much more. When Thanos sheds his mortal form, Nebula is finally able to steal the Infinity Gauntlet.
Though with omnipotent power, she too became a threat to the universe, that the heroes and cosmic beings had to deal with. Even Thanos — realizing his error — joined in to stop her. After stopping Nebula, Adam Warlock became a temporary wielder of the Gauntlet. But, the Living Tribunal felt he was too unstable to control the power. The Living Tribunal dismissed Warlock’s uses of the Gauntlet, and deemed the gems would no longer function together. Thus, preventing anyone from achieving omnipotence through their possession. After the separation, Adam Warlock forms Infinity Watch to safeguard the powerful and dangerous Infinity Gems. Thanos departs to a life of farming. Here he reflects on his life, death, and temporary brush on the good side.
