Captain Atom was created by Joe Gill and Steve Ditko for Charlton Comics. He first appeared in Space Adventures #33 in 1960. When DC Comics purchased Charlton, the character was re-imagined. Captain Atom #1 debuted in 1987 by Cary Bates, Greg Weisman and Pat Broderick.
Nathaniel Adam was a member of the U.S. Air Force. When framed for a crime he did not commit; Nathaniel is forced to participate the experiment, “Project Atom”. The experiment test the durability of a capsule in a nuclear explosion. The test sends Nathaniel into the future, changing his body on a molecular level. Moreover, it gives him the power of the atom. His powers stem from an ability to tap into the quantum field, allowing him to control nuclear forces. Additionally he can fire energy blasts, absorb energy, and transform matter. Not to mention, he can fly, has super speed, and super strength. Watch out Superman. Though there are several Captain Atom specific comics series, the most recent edition ‘The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom’.
