Ready Player One, The Easter Egg of Pop Culture!

First Impressions: Holy Easter Eggs Batman!
The morning after, well it is nice to know that someone has been peeking into my subconscious. They literally ripped out 40 years of things that I loved right out of my head. Things like the Atari 2600, 80’s music, The Shining, Excalibur quotes, and not to mention the IRON FREAKING GIANT! I read the book approximately two years ago and loved it. I held my breathe when it was announced that it would be a movie. The Oasis on film would be a daunting task. Fortunately, Mr. Spielberg was up to the task.
The story is loosely based on the idea of Willy Wonka. An owner of a globally iconic company needs to leave behind their creation to someone worthy. He creates a contest to find the best of the best. Of course, there is the mega-corporation trying to win the contest by brute force and unlimited money. It is up to a kid, played by Tye Sheridan (Cyclops in X-Men Apocalypse), and his only family of virtual misfits to fight for the Oasis.
They definitely made the movie more family-friendly. The book had quite a few dark moments like the original Willy Wonka. This slight change from the original content made the movie more palatable to a general audience.
So this leads me to think about one thing. Will this film really play to the mass audiences? Or is that fact that all the easter eggs and references capture an older 40 to 60 yr old audience? The movie plays heavily on 70’s, 80’s and 90’s pop culture. While this was great for me, I could see younger folks possibly not getting some of the references and becoming less invested.
I, for one, walked away loving the movie and can’t wait for the Blu-ray to be released so I can try and see all the hidden nods (IGN has a list of 138) to my past. I liked it more than Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but I really hope that younger viewers give it a chance and enjoy it for the action-packed thrill ride the movie has to offer!
